About Engineering grinds
Leaving Certificate Engineering mixes workshop skill with a substantial written paper on materials, processes, mechanisms and control. Grinds are strongest on the theory side: past-paper definitions, sketches, calculations and how to set out manufacturing answers the way the marking scheme expects. Tutors can also help plan a design-and-make project and tighten the folio, but the artefact itself has to be made under school supervision with the equipment available there.

Can Engineering grinds replace workshop time?
No. Practical work and the project artefact must be completed in school. Grinds fill the theory gap and help with planning, sketches and evaluation write-ups that often cost easy marks.
Our student is strong in the workshop but weak on the written paper. Is that a good fit for grinds?
Yes — that is one of the most common reasons families book. Tutors drill the recurring written topics and how to sketch and explain processes clearly under time pressure.
Does the new Engineering specification change what tutors teach?
Fifth years starting from September 2026 follow the revised specification, with a larger design-and-manufacture project share. Tell the tutor which year your child is in so they teach the right course.
