About Design and Communication Graphics grinds

Design and Communication Graphics (DCG) is assessed through a student assignment worth 40% and a terminal drawing exam worth 60%. CAD, usually SolidWorks, is compulsory in the assignment. Grinds tend to split between board technique for the exam — orthographic views, auxiliaries, solids in contact, developments — and assignment support on research, sketching and model presentation. Students who can draw cleanly under time pressure usually gain more from exam-focused lessons than from more SolidWorks alone.

Design and Communication Graphics grinds FAQ

Can a tutor help with the DCG project / student assignment?

Yes, with research layout, freehand sketching, CAD modelling and how the pages are marked. The brief is set by the SEC each year, so the tutor works within that theme rather than inventing a different project.

Is DCG the same as Junior Cycle Graphics?

It builds on Graphics, but Leaving Certificate DCG goes deeper into descriptive geometry and adds a major CAD assignment. Students who dropped Graphics often need early catch-up on projection before the harder topics land.

Do DCG grinds work online?

CAD and assignment pages work well over screen share. Board-drawing technique is clearer in person if the student can set up a drawing board; otherwise tutors use shared sketching tools and past-paper mark schemes online.
